## Overview
Let $x \in \mathbb{R}$. The **absolute value** of $x$, denoted $\lvert x \rvert$, is defined as $$\lvert x \rvert = \begin{cases} x & \text{if } x \geq 0 \\ -x & \text{if } x \leq 0 \end{cases}$$
